![]() ABS Secure helps fire service save lives! ABS Secure has joined forces with West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) to teach fire fighters how to gain quick entry through doors to save lives in fire situations. The initiative started with support from Kirklees council, as fire fighters found they were coming across more secure doors fitted by the local authority. The method of bashing the doors with heavy equipment on modern uPVC and composite doors proved timely, expensive to replace doors afterwards and resulted in several fire fighter injuries, so they went to the council for advice. The initial concept was to supply each fire engine with a specialised locksmith tool to gain entry through the cylinder lock, but this proved costly and it was found not to work on some security locks and ABS Secure locks. ABS Secure were then approached to find a solution. We shared our information with WYFRS on current burglary techniques using simple tools, and together came up with two a very quick and simple methods of gaining entry to doors fitted with any type of standard or security cylinder. (The third method of gaining entry through an ABS lock involves two sledge hammers!) ABS Secure then agreed to supply training time, video libraries, tool kits, instructions and training for fire engines and personnel throughout west yorkshire. Chris Atkinson of West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Kirklees council and ABS Secure are now looking to roll this information out to other fire services natiowide.
